I should have been more open minded to giving meditation a shot sooner, as the benefits i gained from regular practice have been substantial. I am now a massive fan of meditation and make sure i practice for at least 30 minutes everyday to keep my nervous system balance maintained.
I grew up as a very adrenal, fear driven child. This caused a condition called sympathetic dominance, where the sympathetic branch of your nervous system is too active, which eventually results in burnout and other health problems.
The sympathetic nervous system was initially used as a survival mechanism, meant to be used infrequently to help the body cope in times of stress and fear. Unfortunately due to our highly stimulative 21st century lifestyles, we are activating our sympathetic nervous systems is so many different ways.
Here are some of the common sympathetic stimulants we encounter in daily life - processed junk foods, high sugar, caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, job stress, video games and adrenaline pumping movies, are some examples of ways we activate our sympathetic branch.
The adrenal glands can only cope so long with the constant demand for adrenal hormones, before they begin to fatigue and exhaust. This results in burnout also known as adrenal fatigue.
Even emotions can activate the sympathetic nervous system such as anger, fear, guilt and even worry. Once you get into a sympathetic dominant state, it becomes a catch 22 situation and you become stuck in a loop of stress and burnout. This causes nutritional depletion in many essential nutrients and toxic metals begin to accumulate and cause bio-chemical imbalances such as involving Zinc and Copper.
Meditation and other mental techniques, are some of the best methods we can use to achieve healthy autonomic nervous system balance . Another of my favorite tools is deep breathing techniques, which are also very effective for shutting off the sympathetic nervous system and are usually incorporated into many meditations.
Without healthy autonomic nervous system balance, the body cannot heal optimally. One must be in a rested parasympathetic state to recover, this is when the body is anabolic and in a state of regeneration. Often many individuals with chronic health issues have imbalances and dysfunctions of the autonomic nervous system, which go completely over-looked.
