Meditation For Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction

I first got into meditation a few years back when i was researching for methods to reduce stress and to support healthy autonomic nervous system balance.

I should have been more open minded to giving meditation a shot sooner, as the benefits i gained from regular practice have been substantial. I am now a massive fan of meditation and make sure i practice for at least 30 minutes everyday to keep my nervous system balance maintained.

I grew up as a very adrenal, fear driven child. This caused a condition called sympathetic dominance, where the sympathetic branch of your nervous system is too active, which eventually results in burnout and other health problems.

The sympathetic nervous system was initially used as a survival mechanism, meant to be used infrequently to help the body cope in times of stress and fear. Unfortunately due to our highly stimulative 21st century lifestyles, we are activating our sympathetic nervous systems is so many different ways.

Here are some of the common sympathetic stimulants we encounter in daily life - processed junk foods, high sugar, caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, job stress, video games and adrenaline pumping movies, are some examples of ways we activate our sympathetic branch.

The adrenal glands can only cope so long with the constant demand for adrenal hormones, before they begin to fatigue and exhaust. This results in burnout also known as adrenal fatigue.

Even emotions can activate the sympathetic nervous system such as anger, fear, guilt and even worry. Once you get into a sympathetic dominant state, it becomes a catch 22 situation and you become stuck in a loop of stress and burnout. This causes nutritional depletion in many essential nutrients and toxic metals begin to accumulate and cause bio-chemical imbalances such as involving Zinc and Copper.

Meditation and other mental techniques, are some of the best methods we can use to achieve healthy autonomic nervous system balance . Another of my favorite tools is deep breathing techniques, which are also very effective for shutting off the sympathetic nervous system and are usually incorporated into many meditations.

Without healthy autonomic nervous system balance, the body cannot heal optimally. One must be in a rested parasympathetic state to recover, this is when the body is anabolic and in a state of regeneration. Often many individuals with chronic health issues have imbalances and dysfunctions of the autonomic nervous system, which go completely over-looked.

You have nothing to lose but your time with meditation and alot to gain.

There is a wealth of great Meditation CD's and books available on Amazon, check out the link below for Guided Meditation CD's with good feedback reviews.

Fungal Beard Hair Loss Cure

Fungal infections causing hair loss, which effect the beard hair follicles are very common. I encountered this problem myself a few years back and wanted to blog about a simple, natural cure which solved this frustrating issue for me.

I myself had two large coin sized hair loss patches on both sides of my beard(see pic below), which often changed in size.

It was rather frustrating, as my doctor was pretty much clueless about beard hair loss and so was my dermatologist, who just wanted to try steroids. I had suspected that it may be caused by a fungal infection after seeing others with similar "patchy" beard hair loss.

Thyme oil is a wonderful essential oil, which has potent anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties. Thyme oil should never be applied to the skin full strength, so it must be diluted in a small amount of oil, i like olive oil in this case.

Fungal Beard Hair Loss Cure

  • 80 Drops of Thyme Essential Oil

To every ounce of Olive Oil.

Mix and apply several times a day, for at least a week to make sure all of the infection is killed.

I purchase my Thyme essential oil from iherb.com, you can check them at - Thyme Essential Oil

Nervous System Tonic Herbs Health Benefits

It is not uncommon in this day and age to be suffering from imbalances and dysfunctions of the nervous system. Many individuals are literally living on there "nerves" with high stimulation and stressful living, which causes the sympathetic branch of the nervous system to become dominant.

Unfortunately living in a sympathetic dominant state can cause a multitude of common health problems including nervous exhaustion and adrenal fatigue. Simply put, the adrenal glands cannot keep up with the constant sympathetic demand for adrenal hormones and one becomes burned out or exhausted.

In order for the body to heal and regenerate optimally, the individual must have a healthy autonomic nervous system balance. There are a number of factors which can effect autonomic balance such as nutrient deficiencies(B Vitamins, Magnesium, Zinc for e.g), alcohol, drug and caffeine use, emotional disorders and chronic stress.

The good news is that there are a wonderful class of herbs known as "nervines" or nervous system tonic herbs, which can support, tone, balance and strengthen the nervous system.

Examples Of Nervine Herbs

Some examples of nervous system support herbs include Blue Vervain, Damiana, Gotu Kola, Kava Kava, Lemon Balm, Motherwort, Oatstraw, Passionflower, Skullcap, St Johns Wort and Valerian.

Each nervine herb has its own unique benefits and thus should be used under the guidance of a qualified practitioner.

Nervous System Tonic Herbs Benefits

  • Reduce Stress & Lower Cortisol
  • Anxiety
  • Occasional Nervousness

Grass-fed Whey Protein Health Benefits

Whey protein is a great source of easily digestible amino acids and is a firm favorite amongst health and fitness enthusiasts. So what are the benefits of grass-fed whey protein ?.

Grass-fed whey protein has a number of benefits over conventional factory farmed whey. To start grass-fed whey protein is not only nutritionally superior, but is free of hormones, antibiotics and other chemicals.

Grass-fed cows are not pumped with growth hormones, which conventional farmers typically use to "fatten" the cow up.

Grass-fed whey contains higher levels of a super healthy trans fat called CLA(Conjugated Linoleic Acid), which studies have shown to have fat burning and anti-cancer properties.

Grass-fed Whey Protein Health Benefits

  • Increase Energy

  • Boost Glutathione Levels

  • Immune System Support

  • Supports Joint & Muscle Health

  • Promotes Muscle Strength, Endurance & Recovery

  • Supports The Gut Lining & Digestive System, Prevents Leaky Gut Syndrome.

  • Complete Protein Source(Contains All 9 Essential Amino Acids)

  • Aid Weight Loss.

  • Supports The Liver's Detoxification Processes.

My favorite brand of grass-fed, hormone free whey protein is Dr Mercola's Miracle Whey Protein. Probably the best whey protein powder i have come across for digestibility, is naturally sweetened and the range of flavors are pretty good also. The chocolate is still my favorite flavor.

Miracle whey is free from hormones, chemicals, gluten, wheat and sugar. Delicious, cold processed whey protein powder.

I purchase Dr Mercola's Miracle Whey from a UK health store called Natu Health, you can check them at - Dr Mercola's Miracle Whey Protein

Now Foods, Liver Detoxifier & Regenerator Review

Now Foods may be a well known and trusted brand, but often there products don't get the praise they deserve and the liver detoxifier and regenerator supplement they produce, definitely deserves more exposure.

A sluggish and over-burdened liver is not uncommon in this day and age, we are bombarded with liver stress from over-indulgence in processed junk foods, alcohol, smoking, drugs, medications and other environmental toxins that we are exposed to on a daily basis.

Now Foods, Liver Detoxifier & Regenerator contains a range of liver supportive nutrients. You have herbs such as Milk Thistle which are good for speeding up the regeneration of liver cells, protecting the liver from toxins and raising Glutathione levels. The supplement actually contains reduced Glutathione which is good as many individuals are depleted of this vital master antioxidant. N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) is included which is another nutrient that increases Glutathione levels.

You have a range of liver and gallbladder supportive herbs included such as Dandelion, Schisandra Berry, Artichoke, Turmeric, Black Radish, Beets and more. Many of these herbs help to increase the flow of bile, which aids in toxin elimination and fat digestion. One herb in particular that im glad they incorporated into the blend is Bupleurum. Bupleurum is a superb herb for cleansing the liver and can also help to raise dopamine levels.

As you can see from the reviews on iherb.com, this supplement has helped alot of people with liver and gallbladder issues.

Personally i believe i genetically have a sluggish liver and will be cycling this product for the rest of my life. I have noticed increased energy, anxiety improved, toxic load reduced, better digestion, improved skin and overall increase in well-being. It has also significantly reduced the detoxification symptoms that were occurring during chelation. So yeah this is a product i am very fond of.

I purchase Now Foods, Liver Detoxifier & Regenerator from iherb.com, you can check them at - Now Foods, Liver Detoxifier & Regenerator

If this is your first time ordering from iHerb, you will get $10.00 off your first order by ordering through the link above.

Water Fasting Dangers For Adrenal Fatigue

Something ive wanted to discuss for a while now, is the many so called health experts blanket recommendations of water fasting for treating sub-optimal adrenal insufficiency or adrenal fatigue as it is often known in the alternative health fields.

One individual who regularly recommends water fasting for adrenal insufficiency is 80/10/10 author Dr Doug Graham. As someone who suffered for over a decade with adrenal insufficiency, i have to say i disagree with his recommendation of water fasting here. Im not a huge fan of any pro-longed water fasting or most common "cleansing" methods anyway, but for those who are in disordered state such as with adrenal insufficiency, i personally feel this is a VERY dangerous thing to do and i urge caution here.

Clearly these people have no understanding about adrenal insufficiency as a condition or the physiological risks that come from having low cortisol and other adrenal hormones, poor blood sugar/electrolyte regulation and lack of stress tolerance, which are major concerns here.

Those with adrenal insufficiency and hypocortisolism often have a hard enough job regulating blood sugar levels with food, let alone under-taking a prolonged water only fast. Fasting places a big enough stress on a healthy individual and i am confident in saying that someone with severe adrenal insufficiency would not be able to cope with the stress involved during water fasting. This type of blanket recommendation is not only very dangerous but could result in death.

Poor blood sugar regulation isn't the only prominent concern with water fasting here, poor electrolyte balance is another common feature of adrenal insufficiency. Those with adrenal insufficiency often have lowered levels of an adrenal steroid hormone called Aldosterone, which primary role is to regulate blood pressure and sodium/potassium balance. Like i say i doubt very much that someone with adrenal insufficiency would be able to cope with the serious stressful demands that water fasting places on the body.

Not just taking the above dangers into account, there is no evidence to suggest that water fasting is particularly helpful for adrenal fatigue anyway or any logic to suggest it would be worthwhile. In fact i would harbor my bets that the increased stress from trying to regulate blood sugar in absence of food, would cause the adrenal glands to crash further. Infact my own experiments with water fasting back when i had adrenal fatigue, would confirm this. You will feel dizzy, begin to get cold, panicky from the surge of adrenaline which is trying to raise blood sugar and eventually you will likely pass out or worse. Experts and advocates will tell you that these adverse symptoms are "detox" or your body going through detoxification, when actually they are symptoms of low blood sugar.

Adrenal insufficiency is not a condition that you can essentially "detox" yourself out of. It is true that toxic heavy metals are often implicated and nutritional balancing is in most cases required to restore yourself from this condition. That being said water fasting is of little use here for detoxification of heavy metals, lack of nutrition would only further exacerbate the problem here.

I understand the frustration that many go through and willingness to trial any sort of therapy whilst chronically ill. I spent over £40,000 on misguided, random supplements and therapies, which most often than not caused problems through mis-use at the time. Seeking a professional who understands your condition is essential with any complex health disorders, if your current doctor isn't helping then find someone who can.

So yeah i urge caution to those thinking about water fasting if they suffer from adrenal insufficiency. The significant potential dangers far out-weigh any potential benefits that would cross over to increased adrenal health.

Bee Pollen Health Benefits

Bee Pollen is a nutritional powerhouse superfood that deserves a place in everyone's kitchen.

I have been using Bee Pollen for about nearly 10 years now and thought it was about time i do a blog post on this wonderfully rejuvenating superfood.

Traditionally Bee Pollen is recommended as an energy and rejuvenating tonic in Chinese medicine. Pollen is said to increase energy, vitality, stamina, endurance, extend longevity, aid recovery from illness, improve sexual function and much more.

Bee Pollen is one of the richest plant sources of B Vitamins and in particular Vitamin B5, which is essential for healthy adrenal gland function. The rich B Vitamin content is largely where Bee Pollen derives its natural energy increasing benefits.

Bee Pollen is one of my favorite foods for nourishing the overall endocrine system and supporting the adrenal glands, which makes it the perfect snack for those suffering from adrenal fatigue.

Bee Pollen typically contains about 40% protein by weight and is an excellent source of easily digestible amino acids.

Bee Pollen Health Benefits

  • Adrenal Gland Support

  • Increase Energy, Stamina & Athletic Performance

  • Treat Allergies(Through strengthening the adrenal glands and immune response)

  • Boost The Immune System

  • Supports The Cardiovascular System

  • Nutritional Powerhouse(Very nearly a "complete" food, rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes and many other beneficial phyto-nutrients)

  • Improve Fertility & Sexual Function

  • Prostate Health Support

  • Soothe Skin Conditions(Eczema, Psoriasis etc)

The only downside to consuming Bee Pollen is that a small number of individuals can be allergic. As such it is best to start with a single grain or two, to check that you tolerate the Pollen before consuming a larger dose. If well tolerated, increase by a few grains everyday until you reach your desired dosage.

It is recommended that you follow this principle for every new batch of bee pollen, to minimize risk of allergic response.

Bee pollen is a natural food which means the dosage can vary between individuals. I feel personally that 1-2 teaspoons is a good dosage for all around adrenal gland, energy, nutritional and allergy support. Those looking to use Bee Pollen to improve athletic performance, may wish to use higher dosages.

My favorite brand of bee pollen is by a manufacturer called Greens Organics, there Bee Pollen is both raw and certified Organic.

Excellent quality Organic Raw Spanish Bee Pollen and can be purchased from Amazon below.

Nettle Leaf Health Benefits

Most tend to think of Nettle as the troublesome stinging weed, but to herbalists and health enthusiasts, nettle is one of the most wonderful general tonic herbs we have access too.

I prefer to consume nettle in tea form, there is something about its mild grassy taste, that is both cleansing and uplifting.

Medicinally different parts of the plant are used with nettle.

The leaf is the highly nutritious part of the plant, which possesses anti-histamine, anti-inflammatory properties, adrenal supportive and is considered to be an all round general "tonic" herb.

The root is mostly used as an aromatase inhibitor and traditionally has been used to treat hormone sensitive cancers, maintain testosterone levels and to treat Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia(BPH).

Nettle Leaf Health Benefits

  • General Tonic Herb

  • Adrenal Gland Support

  • Anti-Inflammatory

  • Anti-Histamine

  • Nutrient Rich(calcium, chlorophyl, iron, zinc, chromium, magnesium, and vitamins A, C, D, and K)

  • Cleanse & Support Kidneys

  • Liver Support

  • Relieve Skin Disorders(Eczema, Psoriasis & Dermatitis)

I purchase my Organic Nettle tea from iherbs.com, you can check them out at - Organic Nettle Tea.

Now Foods P5P Review

The brand of P5P that i supplement with is from the company Now Foods. There are a few reasons why i prefer Now Foods P5P over other brands.

Firstly the capsules are enteric coated, which many experts state is essential for optimal absorption of P5P. The next reason is that the formula also contains other synergistic nutrients such as Vitamin B2(Riboflavin) and Magnesium, two nutrients involved in the B6 conversion process and often deficient.

I have been supplementing with P5P or active Vitamin B6 as it is known for about 1 year now. I had done alot of reading into Pyroluria or Kryptopyrrole disorder as it is commonly referred to in the past, which can cause serious deficiencies of nutrients such as Zinc and Vitamin B6/P5P. I had a urine Kryptopyrrole test done at one point, which came back with severely elevated levels and confirmed my thoughts on the possible root causes of my health problems.

This led me to researching about Vitamin B6 metabolism issues and other genetic Polymorphism's. Years back when i began trying to investigate my chronic health issues, i had a blood testing vitamin panel done, which surprisingly came back with a high Vitamin B6 level, despite having never supplemented. More research unveiled a new school of thought, that the high Vitamin B6(Pyridoxine) level, was because my body wasn't converting it to active Vitamin B6/P5P, hence the levels of Pyridoxine building up in the blood.

There are many factors which can cause impaired Vitamin B6 conversion such as nutrient deficiencies(Vitamin B2, Magnesium & Zinc), poor liver function, metabolic and even genetic disorders.

Being that i am of Scots/Irish descent, i had read of others having similar issues with genetic problems involving B6 metabolism i.e having problems converting B6 into P5P, for whatever reason. Personally i suspect that toxic metal imbalances are the root cause of everything, they are what mess with DNA and eventually cause functional deficiencies in many critical nutrients. There are so many factors involved though, current toxic load, lifestyle, genetic factors, diet, stress levels, adrenal health and emotional well-being all are contributing factors with toxic metal accumulation and bio-chemical imbalances.

I started with 50mg in the morning and the detoxification was INTENSE in the beginning. Im glad i had many supporting supplements on hand, put it that way. Slow and steady wins the race, there are no prizes for pushing it here. I see many recommending 100mg+ dosages of P5P, but if the individual has been deficient for a long period of time, it may be best to start with smaller dosages as things kick back into gear and the body deals with the backlog of toxins. Even a marginal Vitamin B6 deficiency can cause lowered levels of an antioxidant known as Glutathione. The backlog of toxic load has to be dealt with and if you have poor elimination organ function such as with an overburdened sluggish liver, then you will want to go slow.

Another tip is to have an "intestinal chelator" on hand, to "mop" up the heavy metals that are released so to speak from restoring P5P levels. Pectasol-C was very helpful in this regard and lowered the severity of detoxification symptoms significantly. I don't know how i would have coped without it, it also naturally aids the removal of these toxic metals.

Econugenics Pectasol-C Review

This is our first post on our new blog and i will be reviewing one of my favorite health supplements, which is called Pectasol-C. Pectasol-C is a supplement manufactured by a company called Econugenics.

Pectasol-C contains modified citrus pectin, which clinical studies have shown to have a number of health benefits including heavy metal detoxification, supporting cellular health and supporting breast/prostate health.

After finding out about 6-7 years ago that my chronic health issues such as severe adrenal fatigue, poor stress tolerance, depression, anxiety, chronic fatigue and other health problems, were likely the result of heavy metal toxicity including lead, aluminum and mercury. Many of the chelation method i had tried before hand either i didn't tolerate well or the detoxification was too intense to cope with.

I had began to research into natural chelators, which were said to be more gentle in the detoxification process, albeit slower to achieve results. Along the way in my research i came across two compounds, one being Modified Citrus Pectin and the other Alginates from seaweeds. Both of these supplements were generally considered safe, gentle and were getting the job done for many people.

So i ordered a 454g tub of Pectasol-C and started with the recommended 5g dose, 3 times daily. Immediately some of my most prominent symptoms were relieved, usually i would have periods during the day where my cortisol would go very low, blood sugar would become unstable and large amounts of adrenaline would be released to compensate for the poorly regulated blood sugar, which resulted in panic attacks and anxiety. This would leave me shaking, freezing cold on my bed, very scared every day. The first thing i noticed was that the Pectasol-C was stopping the usual adrenal and low blood sugar cascade, as such adrenal gland function began to improve. This to me highlighted just how big a role toxic metals play in disturbing adrenal gland and endocrine function.

The next few months of Pectasol-C use were filled with alternating bouts of fatigue, die-off/detoxification symptoms and lots of chronic symptoms disappearing. Here are some of the symptoms that Pectasol-C either corrected or improved for me -
  • Chronic intestinal candidasis and opportunistic infections were lowered or eliminated.
  • My constant reactions to food and food allergies improved significantly, to the point where i could pretty much eat most things again, without complaining of malaise afterwards.
  • Depression improved.
  • Panic attacks from low blood sugar eliminated. Anxiety improved.
  • Body composition improved, i had the typical large torso appearance and long thin arms/legs. This is a typical body composition for those with toxic metal issues.
  • Puffy face which was in-tannable/pale - eliminated
  • Skin rash on arm - eliminated.
  • Chronic fatigue, hormone balance and adrenal gland function - Improved
I still continue on with a maintenance dose of 5g a day, in order to never let things get so imbalanced again. I follow many other natural lifestyle tips, that have all helped recovery significantly and i will be posting more about those soon.

I order my Pectasol-C from iherb.com, you can check them out at - Econugenics Pectasol-C. If this is your first time ordering from iHerb, you will get $10.00 off your first order by ordering through the link above.
